Self-discipline is an important concept in contemporary western practical philosophy and a key word for liberalism and democratic theory. Its interpretation involves the understanding of many other concepts in political philosophy. At present, the academic research mainly focuses on the “self-serving” level of self-discipline, that is, the moral self-discipline of the subject itself, but often neglects the level of “involving him”, that is, other people and society should also bear the obligation to support and respect individual self-discipline. This article takes Kant’s view of self-discipline as its starting point and attempts to explore a self-discipline that can be applied to the public domain.
