近年来,一批立志革新的导演艺术家,突破单一的写实主义演剧方法与旧的演出样式,创造了一大批新型戏剧。概括其特点是:一、运用虚构、夸张、变形的手法,并借鉴我国戏曲美学原则和外国现代流派的某些因素,藉以丰富导演语汇,拓展舞台表现力。二、追求对生活的哲理思考,削弱演剧幻觉性,拆除“四堵墙”的阻隔,全方位拉近观演间的距离,并用间离效果手法,溶入荒诞派、意识流、心理外化等成分,揭示人物内心隐秘,剖露人物潜在意识,使观众引发出更深的反思。三、革新演出形式,以开放性、多向性、复合性的演出结构,取代封闭性、单向性、直一性的陈旧模式。增添了歌舞、戏曲、哑剧以及杂技等多种手段,使话剧具有多媒介、多组接的表现形态。总之,一批探索性戏剧的成功演出,使沉闷多年的剧坛别开了生面,为话剧的多样化闯出了一条新路,并将为未来戏剧的发展,开创更加广阔的前景。
