Semi-flexible and semi-rigid piers are new types of piers developed on the basis of flexible piers [1], [2] and [3]. With the increase of pier height, the economic effect of the flexible piers or semi-flexible and semi-rigid piers is more significant. As the piers, the flexural stability problems are more conspicuous. This article will study the stability of stepped variable section piers (semi-flexible and semi-rigid piers), that is, the formulas for calculating the critical forces of two-section and three-section columns, and the formulas for calculating the critical force of linear columns.
