SUNDAY, OCT. 21ST [1492]. At 10 o’clock, we arrived at a cape of the island, and the other boats were stopped. After having a meal, I went on shore(岸), and found a single house that nobody stay in. We had no doubt(疑义) that the people had run away. I ordered that nothing to be touched, and went with my captains to view the country. This island even exceeds(超出) the others in beauty and wealthy. Everything looked as green as in April in Andalusia. Going round(到处走动) one of these lakes, I saw a snake, we caught it. I think there are many more such about here. While we were in search of (寻找)some good water we came upon a village of the natives, the villagers found us and gave up(放弃) their houses, carrying off their goods to the mountain. I ordered that nothing to be touched, not even the value of a pin. Soon after we saw several of the villagers towards our party, and one of them came up to us, we gave some hawk’s(hawk鹰) bells and glass beads(小珠子) to them, and he was very happy. We asked him in return(作为报答), for water. I shall depart immediately, if the weather serve, sail round the island, till I succeed in meeting with(和……会面) the king, in order to acquire(获得) any of the gold. Afterwards(然后)I shall set sail for another very large island. I shall decide what to do; at all events(不管发生什么事) I am firm to proceed(继续前进) on to the continent, and visit the city where I shall deliver the letters of your Highnesses(殿下) to the Great Can, and demand(请求;要求) an answer, with which I shall return.
