这件作品是上野宽永寺寺宝,也是日本水石的杰出代表。据宽永寺秘藏《黑发山缘起绘卷》载,这块石头最初发现于江户时代后期山岳宗教圣地——日光市黑发山(今男体山)山脚下的中禅寺湖内,石呈深黑色,外形似一座神圣的高峰,幕府著名政治家松平定信(1758~1829)将之命名为《黑发山》。这块石头对我们了解水石在日本文化的历史、研究江户时期的文化都有着非常重要的意义。
