More than 15 companies are actively promoting computer software for reserve assessment, mine design and mining programs. Modeling techniques and mine planning methods vary depending on the vendor of the software and on how they should simulate the ore body. This article outlines the modeling techniques and other general features used by the 14 computer programs provided by 13 different mining software vendors. The features of the package outlined in this article include: • the type of deposit that the software is intended for; • the database management provided by the software, if any; • the types of models generated by the software, including 2D and 3D block models, Rule block models, cross-section models, string models and solid models; • the flexibility of the model to accommodate the included geological interpretation; • compilation and mapping functions, including 3D graphics and interactive drawing; • open-pit and underground mining design and Plan; User interface, including menus, macro processing and drawing. The article examines the applicability of different approaches based on the actual users’ perceptions in mining companies and outlines some of the salient features of the software provided.
