Although wireless connectivity accounted for only 3% of all PBX lines sold in 1997, the technology is increasingly being accepted by more and more companies. In early 1997, executives at Crate & Barrel in New York decided to adopt a new phone system. Their original system was unable to provide advanced calling capabilities and was unable to support the growing number of stores. The company sent a proposal for proposal to twelve PBX providers and tested the equipment of the vendors, eventually choosing the Definity wireless commerce system from Lucent Technologies.
