Objective To investigate the gene expression of macrophage scavenger receptor 1 (MSR1) in peripheral blood of patients with essential hypertension and to explore its relationship with the predisposition of essential hypertension. Methods The mRNA expression of MSR1 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of patients with primary hypertension and controls was detected by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT - PCR). Results Compared with the control group, the expression of MSR1 mRNA in PBMC of patients with essential hypertension was significantly increased (P <0.001). Logistic regression analysis showed that the high level of MSR1 gene expression was the most predictive risk factor for essential hypertension (OR = 14.006, P <0.001). Conclusion MSR1 may be involved in the pathophysiological process of essential hypertension. MSR1 mRNA expression may be one of the risk factors of essential hypertension.
