136 gerbils were utilized to evaluate the efficacyof motherwort in the treatment of cerebral infarc-tion.The animals underwent unilateral carotidligation under ether anesthesia.The motherwort-treated gerbil group received a dose of 10g/kg (lgmcrude drug/ml)30 minutes before ligation.Theanimals were evaluated for neurologic deficit 8 hourspostligation,then sacrificed.Monoemine contents ofeach hemisphere and brain stem,and water contentof cerebral cortex were measured.Motherwortsignificantly decreased the development of acuteischemic cerebral edema and reduced the disordersof monoamine metabolism.The motherwort-treatedanimals had a benign clinical course and mortalityat 5 days was reduced by 34.5% (5/30 v.22/43) inmotherwort-treated gerbils.
