“身份不明的苦恼”是於梨华的小说《会场现形记》中五叔揶揄某人的说法。“我”是新到美国的留学生,在宾州大学教书的五叔带我到会场开眼界,五叔向我介绍某人:“……听说他犯了一种‘身份不明’的苦恼;在中国人面前他以美国人自居,在美国人面又不得不做中国人,换来换去,有时连自己都糊涂了,就会闹病……”这种说法,表面看来是讽刺了某人的世故圆滑,而从深层次来分析,则不难看出这种“身份不明的烦恼”的真正由来——游离于东西方文化的夹
