Polysemy is a universal phenomenon of human language, a simple and effective way to satisfy people’s further cognition of the world, embodies the principle of simplicity and economic principles of human language. Relying on the perspective of linguistic typology, this paper examines the polysemy of English and Chinese verbal lexicons and argues that modern English has strong semantic flexibility, high dependence on context, and low independence. The meaning of the same word in Chinese is relatively small in different contexts , Lexical expansion and reliance on the context of relatively small, relatively large independence, it seems richer and refined, the word polysemy is far less than English.
