Glucagon-like peptide-1, an incretin hormone secreted by intestinal L cells, promotes glucose-dependent insulin secretion, pancreatic beta cell proliferation and differentiation and inhibits its apoptosis upon binding to its receptor, delays gastric emptying, But does not cause increased body mass and hypoglycemia, thus protecting pancreatic β-cell function. The early application of such drugs in the disease, damaged β-cell function and β cell number may reverse. Glucagon-like peptide-1 analogues and dipeptidyl peptidase IV inhibitors have brought new hope for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
