《历代名画记》一书告诉我们,中国画的现实主义创作方法已经有了完整体系。它告诉我们,人物画、彩色画以及艺术为社会人生之服务性是何等的重要,但也有一些偏见。这两方面都在此后中国画的发展史上起了很大作用。此后的画论著作和绘画创作,无不循其要旨,只是所取有所轻重不同而已。随着时代之推移,封建社会及其统治阶级走向下坡路,它所崇尚的儒家思想也更向唯心主义方向发展。禅宗则独尊于佛教各宗之上;道家思想早已背离了老子的学说,而神化了庄周学说成为宗教。
The Book of Historical Paintings tells us that the method of creating realistic Chinese paintings has a complete system. It tells us how portraits, color paintings, and art are the service of social life, but there are also some prejudices. Both of these aspects have played a significant role in the development of Chinese painting since then.
