Delacroix’s massacre of the island of Chiao, published in 1824, is based on an episode of the then Greek war of independence: the Turkish invasion forces plundered the island of Chios and massacred unarmed Greek civilians. Greece, long ruled by Turkey, emerged from the War of Independence in 1821 and won the sympathy and support of progressive Persons throughout Europe. Delacroix also created the painting in this spirit.
