Both state-owned and private companies in Japan are desperately studying the possibility of using underground space. The Japan Science and Technology Agency hopes to establish an underground microgravity laboratory in which the test equipment can be allowed to fall freely along a 100-meter-deep well to reach a state of weightlessness in a period of 4 to 5 seconds. Underground space has various advantages (for example, it can be protected from electromagnetic waves), so it can have a variety of uses, including the construction of superconducting magnetic energy storage devices, microgravity laboratories, factories manufacturing integrated circuits, and rocket launching wells. For areas prone to earthquakes (such as Japan), underground construction is a very attractive idea because underground structures are less vulnerable to earthquakes.
