According to Gas Turbine World’s November-December 2012 issue, Mitsubishi Power Systems Americas has embarked on a retrofit of the steam-cooled M501J air-cooled combustion system to make gas turbines faster and more flexible to operate. Under ISO conditions, the M501J gas turbine with a steam-cooled flame tube was introduced in 2009 with a basic load of 327 MW and a heat rate of 8 783 kJ / kWh (41% efficiency). The M501JAC has a design rated output of 310 MW and an efficiency of 41%. In contrast, the air-cooled M501JAC gas turbine starts faster and reaches full output because it does not depend on the supply of external steam
