Second, some major gold producing countries have vigorously strengthened the exploration and development of gold. 1. Australia Australia has produced 6,300 tons of gold, of which 1,700 tons are from placer gold and 4,600 tons from veins. The veins are mainly collected from the Taikoo (2500 tons) in Western Australia and the Paleozoic (1900 tons) in East Australia (Woodall, 1988). Australia produced only 17 tons of gold in 1980, rising to 59 tons in 1985 and 75 tons in 1986. If this trend continues, by the end of the 1980s, Australia could become the second largest gold producer in the Western world.
