参加比赛的队参加本届比赛的队共13个,它们是:南斯拉夫队,上届锦标赛和奥运会篮球赛冠军;苏联队,上届锦标赛亚军和奥运会第三名;巴西队,上届锦标赛第三名;西班牙队,莫斯科奥运会第四名,代替放弃参加比赛权利的奥运会亚军意大利队;捷克队,欧洲第三名,因欧洲冠军苏联队和亚军南斯拉夫队都取得参加比赛资格,曲该队代表欧洲参加:美国队,北美洲冠军;巴拿马队,中美洲冠军;乌拉圭队,南美洲冠军;澳大利亚队,大洋洲冠军;中国队,亚洲冠军;象牙海岸队,非洲冠军;哥伦比亚队,东道国和加拿大队,国际篮联特选队。
