Objective: To form the expert consensus on the treatment of hypertension with Chinese patent medicine (CPM).Methods: A Delphi study was conducted in three rounds with forty cardiovascular experts who have rich clinical experience in the treatment of hypertension with CPM as participants.Three rounds of consultation were made to get consensus on the general principle of CPM and the indication of selected CPMs.Results: More than 80% experts agreed the following principles.CPM is suitable for all hypertension patients, but the usages are different when treat hypertension in different stages.CPM could be used alone to treat grade Ⅰ hypertension (82.50%), while CPM and Western medicine (WM) should be used together to treat grade 2 hypertension (87.50%) and grade 3 hypertension (100.00%).The CPMs should be used according to the change of symptoms (87.50%), and be taken after meal to avoid their side-effects (88.23%).CPM and WM should be taken separately (90.00%) when used together.CPM could reduce the side-effects of WMs (85.00%).For hypertension treatment, the CPMs recommended by more than 70% experts include Tianma Gouteng (TMGT) granule (90%), Qiju Dihuang (QDJH) capsule (87.5%), Jinkui Shenqi (JKSQ) pill (80%), Yinxingye (Ginkgo) tablet (80%), Niuhuang Jiangya (NHJY) pill (76.47%), BanxiaTianma (BXTM) spill (70.59%).The indications of selected CPMs were specified with symptoms related to TCM pattern classification.Conclusion: The expert consensus can be formed for the treatment of hypertension withCPMs, which could help the WM doctors to use CPMs correctly.
