@@ Languages having comparative constructions usually make use of four elements: a gradable predicate, two compared elements - one being the comparee and the other the standard, and an item which introduces the standard, for example, bi in Chinese. The compared elements in Chinese seem to exhibit different behavior, which has caught the attention from various researchers. Liu, et al. (2001) argue that the two compared elements in Chinese comparatives can be any phrases, NPs, VPs, APs, PPs, and clauses, as long as they parallel in structure, as exemplified in (1a-e), respectively.
