@@ In GB, the overt wh-movement at S-structure as in (1) is licensed and isomorphically rendered into the LF representation in (2): (1) what does John think Mary wrote t? (2) Which x, x=THING such that John think(s) Mary wrote x. The reason why the S-representation of (1) should be rendered into the LF representation of (2) lies in the establishment of LF representation as an independent level of representation at the interface as argued in May (1976) and Huang (1982). Accordingly, an abstract movement of the shenme (what) in-situ in a language without overt wh-movement like Chinese is implemented from the S-structure in (3) to the LF representation in (4): (3) Yuehan renwei Mali xie-le shenme?
