Xanthohumol (XN) is the major prenylated flavonoid present in the hop plant, Humulus lupulus L.(Cannabinaceae)and also a common ingredient of beer.It gained considerable interest as a cancer preventive agent as several studies showed that it exerts chemopreventive activities relevant to suppression of cancer development at the initiation, promotion and progression phases.XN has been reported to modulate the activities of enzymes involved in carcinogen metabolism, have antioxidant and free radical scavenging activity, acts as an anti-inflammatory agent by inhibiting cyclooxygenases-1 and-2, inhibits DNA synthesis and induces cell cycle arrest, apoptosis and cell differentiation.
