Obesity is not only related to metabolic syndromes in the periphery, but also to compromised performance of the brain. This study examined the responses of glutathione (GSH) in the brain to the challenge of high fat diet-induced obesity, and evaluated the protective effect of an ethanol/water extract from bamboo Phyllostachys edulis (BEX).Male C57BL/6J mice were fed either standard (10% calories from fat) or high fat (45% calories from fat) diet, with or without BEX supplementation (1%, w/w).After 6 months, peripheral inflammation was assessed by the concentration of tumor necrotic factor alpha (TNF) in the serum, and inflammation status of the brain was evaluated by the gene expression of representative cytokines in the forebrain.
