Piercing-sucking insects are important pests of tobacco, capable of transmitting virus diseases.Field trials were conducted in 2012 and 2013 in Longyan,Fujian province,China,to evaluate the role of garlic,Allium sativum,as a deterrent crop to help control the primary piercing-sucking pests,Myzus persicae,Bemisia tabaci and Nezara viridula,as an intercrop in flue-cured tobacco fields. The effects of garlic intercropping on piercing-sucking pests in tobacco fields were primarily analysed from the perspective of community ecology in three intercropping arrangements and a tobacco monoculture.Insects targeted in this study were classified as either parasitic enemies of tobacco pests(namely, hyperparasites)or as piercing-sucking pests. The abundance of piercing-sucking pests significantly decreased in intercropping systems garlic in flue-cured tobacco fields. On the other hand, the abundance of Aphidius gifuensis,an important parasitic enemy of the green peach aphid, was significantly increased. The community analysis also confirmed the changes in dominance in pest species and this was significantly related first to the treatments and then to the increased presence of Aphidius gifuensis. These results are significant in showing that enemy species such as A.gifuensis may increase with diversification of vegetation suggesting that alternate prey or shelters are becoming more available in these fields. The results may have important consequences regarding the reduction of transmission of virus diseases by piercing-sucking pests such as aphids.
