Phospholipids (PLs) and poly unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from Antarctic kriH were extracted using supercritical carbon dioxide and ethanol.Antarctic krill are known to contain ample amounts of phospholipids that are combined with omega 3 poly unsaturated fatty acids (PL-PUFAs).PL-PUFA is known to have various health promoting effects such as suppression of hypertension, protection against renal failure and suppression of elevated serum glucose level. The aim of this research is to isolate PL-PUFA by extraction and purification processes.Several types of extraction processes such as two-step supercritical fluid extraction,Soxhlet extraction and combined process were attempted using supercritical carbon dioxide and ethanol.Supercritical Anti-solvent Systems (SAS) and Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE) were also carried out using carbon dioxide to increase the purity of PL-PUFAs in the extracted oil by removing only the neutral lipids and residual ethanol. The results of each experiment were compared to determine the optimum method of extraction and its processing conditions.
