The Père Davids deer (Elaphurus davidianus) , known in China as the Milu, was at one time widely distributed throughout the marshes of the Shandong Peninsula in north-eastern China.Based on fossil findings, it is almost certain that the deer has been extinct for over 1500 years in the wild in China due to over-hunting and encroachment of humans on their habitat.
