Profound changes in mortality rates have led to an increasing number of women surviving to the menopause and having years of active life beyond it all.It is possible that menopause may also be a risk factor for schizophrenia, as nearly 37 % of women with schizophrenia develop their illness after the age of 45, the so called second peak.An understanding of the neuro protective and antidopaminergic effects of estrogen have led us to believe that changes need to be instigated to effectively treat women with schizophrenia during this phase.
