Corrosion-Erosion Behavior of 304 and 316 Stainless Steel in Simulated PWR Primary Conditions

  Corrosion—erosion processes are commonly found in pipes, diaphragms and many other components for chemical, petrochemical and marine applications.The corrosion-erosion behavior of 304 and 316 stainless steel was investigated in simulated PWR primary conditions by means of weight loss test, electrochemical measurement and microstructure examination.The results show that with the addition of zinc, the corrosion-erosion rate of 304 and 316 is effectively reduced, and the corrosion-erosion rate of 316 is lower than that of 304.The morphology and chemical composition of surface are obviously different from those without zinc.Some crystal-like corrosion products were found on the surface.The addition of nitrogen largely reduces the corrosion rate of 304 and 316, which means that the nitrogen may protect the surface of 304 and 316 stainless.From electrochemical measurement, it is found that the specimen with the nitrogen protection has the best corrosion resistance.The specimens anti-corrosion ability improves with the addition of zinc but decreases under the impingement.
