Background: Alcohol dependence is a common risk factor of suicide in many countries.The traditional therapeutic models for alcohol dependence could not offer good enough outcome to prevent suicidal or violent behaviours in Taiwan.We tried to establish a multi-disciplinary alcohol reduction service to reduce suicidal attempt.Methods: Since 2007, the Public Health Department of New Taipei City supports Suicide Prevention Centre of Mackay Memorial Hospital to establish a multi-disciplinary alcohol reduction service.All patients with alcohol dependence in the service received outpatient clinics, group therapies, individual motivation enhance therapy, family therapies, case management, psycho-education, and pharmacotherapy in the duration of 3 months at least.Results: From 2007 to 2010, there were 95 participants attending the service.Almost participants reduced the amount of alcohol use and the frequency of suicide attempt.Individual motivation enhance therapy was the most satisfaction of patients.The prevalence of suicidal attempt was decreased from 10% to 2% after the service.Conclusion: The multi-disciplinary alcohol reduction service is acceptable by patients with alcohol dependence and their family.The further studies should be evaluated the efficiency for suicide prevention by studying large samples.
