Pueraria tuberosa DC (Fabaceae) is a perennial woody lianas which is highly valued in Ayurveda and traditional Chinese systems of medicine. The major constituents of Pueraria tuberosa were isoflavonoids, mainly puerarin, an isoflavonoid C-glycoside found in the genus Pueraria. It exhibits a great variety of biological and pharmacological activities. It is used clinically for treatment of cardiac and cerebral blood vascular diseases. It has been shown to possess many pharmacological activities such as antioxidant activity, anti-inflammatory activities, and protective activity against ischemic retinopathy.More recent investigations reported puerarin could induce apoptosis in cancer cells.Plant cell cultures remain a favoured methodology for biotechnological production of nature-based compounds despite large-scale destruction of natural habitat due to higher demand and overexploitation of bioresources. Moreover, the conventional propagation of Pueraria is too slow. There is disparity in puerarin content due to varying seasonal and agro-ecological conditions.
