The physical characteristics of shoot apical meristem and floral meristem from plants are maintained by two sets of complementary genes. The flowers.development depends on the genes of floral meristem identity (for example: LFY, AP1 and so on), while another set of genes including Terminal Flower1 (TFL1) extend vegetative growth to inhibit flower formation throughout the growth phase. The characteristics of inflorescence meristem were maintained by TFL1 gene and promoted by LFY and AP1/AP2 genes.TFL1 gene plays an important role in forming and maintaining the structure of inflorescence. The plants without this gene function usually flower earlier, and their normal inflorescence development is inhibited. The inflorescence meristem eventually acquires floral identity, which produces a terminal flower.
