A fine balance between insulin and glucagon secretion ensures normal glucose homeostasis.Insulin, via activation of insulin receptor (IR) and its signaling, suppresses hepatic glucose production and facilitates glucose uptake in the muscle and fat cells thereby lowing blood glucose.Glucagon activates its receptor (Gcgr) to exert a variety of biological functions, predominantly enhancing hepatic glucose production and glycogenolysis.Within the islets, insulin suppresses glucagon secretion via activation of the PI3-kinase/Akt-GABAAR pathway, leading to GABAAR membrane translocation and membrane hyperpolarization in the cells.
