The rural population of the Centane district of the former Transkei region, South Africa, an area with high incidence of oesophageal cancer, is partly reliant on home-grown maize as dietary staple.Before the discovery of fumonisins, maize samples from this area showed the presence of deoxynivalenol (DON), zearalenone (ZEA), nivalenol (NIV) and moniliformin.
