Virtually every biological process is sensitive to pH changes.For neurons, changes in intra-or extracellular pH (pHi, pHo) can have deleterious effects on synaptic transmission and excitability.Thus, normal neuronal function requires the regulation of arterial pH (by kidneys and lungs), brain extracellular fluid pH (by choroid plexus and blood-brain barrier, and influenced by astrocytes), and neuronal pHi.Neurons respond to intracellular acid or alkali loads by modulating rates of acid-base transporters so as to return pHi toward normal.Because of metabolism and the gradients governing passive fluxes of protons and HCO3 ions, neurons tend to acidify.
