There are about 11,000 plants with known medicinal properties and more than 200 ot these are grown commercially.Pests affect both wild and cultivated medicinal plants.Wood borer is the main pest of the plants.Natural enemy Scleroderma guani which was found in China has proved to be effective in control of them.It is an ecto-parasitic insect. These wasps are small but have a strong boring ability.According to preliminary statistics, S.guani can parasitize Lepidoptera, Coleoptera, and Hymenoptera, totaling 70 species. These wasps survive over winter, allowing continued control of the pest. They have been particularly effective for pests which are difficult to control. Therefore, as a natural enemy of insects, S.guani has great potential.
