Cardiovascular complications are major determinants for prognosis in patients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis.Recent advances in echocardiographic technology have demonstrated that left ventricular diastolic function is impaired in patients with end-stage renal disease even with preserved systolic function.Possible mechanisms for diastolic dysfunction include left ventricular hypertrophy, myocardial fibrosis, chronic anemia, hypertension, hypercalcemia, and underlying activated renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system.
