Phytochemical content of distinct Moringa oleifera L,tissues (leaves,stems,and petioles) as affected

  Moringa oleifera L.is a multipurpose plant being promoted as a sustainable source of bioactive phytochemicals and nutrients to reduce human and animal malnutrition.The aim of this study was to assess the phytochemical profile of distinct tissues from Moringa oleifera L.as affected by the age of shoot biomass(re-growth).Five glucosinolates,two hydroxycinnamic acids,and twelve flavonoids were identified in stems,petioles,and leaves of plants harvested at 30,35,and 40 days after pruning(DAP)by high-performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)-PDA-ESIMSn.The results obtained showed that the leaves had the highest concentrations of the target phytochemicals in comparison with stems and petioles,while petioles had higher concentrations than stems.Concerning the timing for shoot biomass(re-growth),in general,Moringa oleifera L,plants at 35 DAP displayed the best phytochemical content,surpassing plants harvested at 30 and 40 DAP.The whole outcomes obtained point out Moringa oleifera L as an interesting source of phytochemicals,which could constitute an innovative healthy ingredient for developing new foods.
