The Adulis Project started in 2011,directed by the Ce.RDO in collaboration with the Centre for Geotechnology,University of Siena and the National Museum Eritreo.The project aims to investigate and promote the cultural heritage of the ancient port site of Adulis,one of the most important archaeological sites in Eritrea and East Africa and one of the most important trade centres of the south-western coast of the Red Sea,the maritime gateway of the kingdom of Aksum.The archaeological area covers about 40 acres,the whole area has been defined using a GPS in RTK mode.In 2011 three areas of excavation have been opened.The first two fieldworks season revealed a detailed stratigraphic sequence and massive walls,which required a complex documentation work,highlighting the need of a system for managing data in a GIS,in which to collect all the stratigraphic,topographic and cartographic data.
