Scaled up synthesis of platinum nanowires using microfluidics

  One endeavor of the nanochemistry is to design the protocols and methods for the scale up synthesis of nanomaterials using bottom-up approaches from molecular precursors.In recent past,microreactors and microfluidics have proved useful to design continuous flow methods to synthesize gram amounts of polymers and metal nanoparticles.Here we report on the scaled up synthesis of Pt nanowires using a microfluidic device.The synthesis itself was made with platinum acetylacetonate as precursor,iron carbonyl as reductant and oleylamine as solvent and capping agent.The microfluidics offers excellent heat transfer,small reaction volumes,and allows easy alteration of reaction parameters such as reaction time or ratio of the reactants through manipulation of precursor flow rates etc.
