Prevalence estimates of obesity are often based on self-reported body mass index (BMI) data due to financial and logistical barriers in obtaining measured BMI data.Given that self-reported BMI data are prone to bias and error, researchers have recently been encouraged to use correction equations to minimize the bias and error and produce adjusted self-reported BMI estimates that more closely mirror measured BMI results. As obesity correction equations are a relatively new area of research, we present lessons learned in developing and applying correction equations to self-reported BMI data for 17,126 adults in Atlantic Canada.
