  Column-switching HPLC has been widely used in the last several decades.When the target analytes are retained on the both columns, it is named "two-dimensional (2D)" HPLC.If only one or several interested analytes were extracted from the matrix by the first dimensional pre-column and separated on the second dimensional analytical column, it is named "heart-cutting" 2D HPLC.When each component of the sample is separated on the both dimensional columns with different retention mechanisms, it is the "comprehensive" 2D HPLC.The comprehensive 2D HPLC technique is suitable for the separation of entire-component in the complex samples, for which the peak capacity of the single-column is limited.Over a few thousand of peak capacity is expected by adding the separation capability of MS detection.Commercial available HPLC modules are easily modified to a comprehensive 2D HPLC system, but the separation time is ultra long by the limitation of the hardware.In addition, the data treatment process of the comprehensive 2D HPLC is inconvenient with additional software.
