Adipokines are cytokines specifically produced by adipose tissue.Adiponectin is an adipokine with anti-atherogenic and insulin-sensitizing properties.Specific adiponectin receptors, AdipoR1 and AdipoR2, are present in adipose tissue, indicating adiponectin may have autocrine/paracrine effects on its production or action. We have been studying the effects that gastric bypass surgery induces on the production of adipokines and their receptors according to the distinct metabolic state of the patient after surgery. Our results indicate that adipokine tissue level expression may be disparate from its circulating levels at metabolically distinct times, demonstrating highly regulated pathways of synthesis and release.
