The enzyme histidine decarboxylase (HDC), which generates histamine, is highly expressed in CDllb+Gr-1+ immature myeloid cells (IMCs) that play a critical role in infection, inflammation and tumorigenesis.However, the role of IMC-derived histamine or HDC in atherogenesis remains poorly understood.Here, using HDC-EGFP bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) transgenic reporter mice (HDC-EGFP), we demonstrate that HDC+ IMCs increase in the circulation in response to hypercholesterolemia and contribute to atherosclerosis.
