Cancers progress through successive rounds of mutation acquisition and clonal expansion.Selection is provided by the cancer microenvironment and reduces the spectrum of possible evolutionary pathways.

Cancers progress through successive rounds of mutation acquisition and clonal expansion.Selection is provided by the cancer microenvironment and reduces the spectrum of possible evolutionary pathways.In analogy to the concept of evolvability in Darwinian evolution, it is suggested that evolutionary pathways during cancer progression are also restricted by inner constraints of the cancer genome architecture.
