Background:Several researchers indicated that cherry blossoms could provide valuable bioactive materials.However, there were few reports regarding cherry blossoms of anti-inflammatory effect.Objective:The present investigation was carried out to study the anti-inflammatory effect of cherry blossom,which was used as a soothing ingredient in skin care product.Methods:In vitro studies, the anti-inflammatory effect of cherry blossom on the nitric oxide (NO) inhibition assay in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) treated RAW 264.7 cells was investigated.A total of 40 subjects, were randomized in a single-blind, placebo-controlled trial treated with a cosmetic containing cherry blossom extract or the placebo in the 3% sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) patch test for 9 days.Evaluation included a visual score and determination of erythema value (E value).Results:In vitro studies, 2% cherry blossom extract reduced NO by 31.83% compared to control sample (p< 0.05).After 9 days of the experiment in human, it was found that the visual score of Jeju Blossom 3% and erythema values were lower than that of the placebo group on D3, D5 and D9.Conelusion:Cherry blossom shows good anti-inflammatory effect in vitro and in vivo, and represents a promising cosmetic functional ingredient used in soothing skin care product by reducing inflammation.
