The outbreak of SARS in laboratories has raised the importance of practicing safety in laboratories where live microbiological and virological organisms are encountered.The principle of biosafety is containment, i.e., implementing safe methods for managing infectious materials in the laboratory environment where they are being handled or maintained.The purpose of containment is to reduce or eliminate exposure of potentially hazardous agents to the laboratory worker, other persons, and the outside environment.There are three elements involved: laboratory practice and techniques, safety equipment, and facility design.
