This qualitative study investigated influences of support from significant others on the relapse tendency of substance abusers when they face tension in Macau.6 participants were recruited at a local non-profit organization for substance abusers. To expose the correlation of the Tension-Reduction Hypothesis and supports from significant others, individual-based face-to-face semi-structured interviews were conducted.Data was collected and analyzed by following guidelines proposed by Hycner (1985).Participants revealed that tension (negative affects, stress from life events) will result in impulse in taking drugs. The effects of support from family, workplace, and community are shown to be protective against the risks of relapse. It is also found that sensation-seeking and boredom may result in relapse other than the tension reduction hypothesis, suggesting a meta-model for relapse prevention.Recommendations and limitations are suggested to promote further study in the field.A further study will be executed by the authors with the help of Macau local NGOs (e.g., ARTM) for a more accurate and precised development on the understanding of the substance abusers needs.
