Photocatalytic Decomposition of Methylene Blue by Electrospun Metal-Doped TiO2 Nanofibers

  Electrospinning has been used in recent years to produce nanofibers with extreme lengths and high aspect ratios.This technique also provides a simple and convenient method to produce fibers with polymeric,metallic,or ceramic compositions [1].The fabrication of TiO2 nanofibers by eletrospinning was first reported in 2003 [2].In this work,we fabricated metal (Co2+,Ni2+,Cu2+,and Zn2+) doped TiO2 nanofibers to be used as photocatalysts and photovoltaics by using an electrospinning technique.We investigated the influence of metal doping on the phase transformation and crystallite growth of the electrospun TiO2 nanofibers.Furthermore,the photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue using these materials was studied.Co2+,Ni2+,and Zn2+ were found to promote the anatase-rutile (A-R) phase transformation,whereas Zn2+ inhibited this process.The as-prepared catalysts were evaluated in the photodecomposition of methylene blue under UV light.Ni2+- and Zn2+-doped TiO2 nanofibers were found to be more efficient than pure TiO2 nanofibers in this reaction.The photocatalytic degradation rate fitted a pseudo-first-order equation.Zn2+-doped TiO2 nanofibers were found to be promising materials for the photocatalytic decomposition of methylene blue with a kinetic constant of 0.0240 min-1.
