Background and aims Intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) residing within the intestinal epithelium are endowed with the ability to safeguard the integrity of the epithelium as well as ward against intestinal pathogens.Failure of balancing between the thymic (natural) and peripheral (induced) subpopulations together with the misbehavior of those cells may initiate and/or exacerbate inflammatory bowel disease.Previous findings suggested there are abnormal methylations within the FZD7 promoter region, which is a receptor of canonical Wnt signaling pathway.Wnt pathway is known to interact with T lymphocytes possibly via IL-15.We investigate whether methylation of FZD7 promoter can interact with IEL function and cause damage in the intestinal epithelium.
