For approximately 30 years the field of forensic genetics has embraced molecular biology tools for characterization of biological evidence for human,animal,plant,and microbiological evidence.Indeed,the discipline may the first to implement DNA typing tools as routine.These methods are extremely sensitive,offer high resolution,and can be somewhat automated.Given the current capabilities of forensic DNA typing,one might opine that for the foreseeable future there are few changes needed and only refinements will occur.After all,results can be obtained from as miniscule a sample as a single shed hair.However,at times new technologies and capabilities can provide opportunities to improve substantially current practices and point to opportunities for advancement where previously the capabilities seemingly appeared to have reached the ultimate in application.
